Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science are often linked together and correlated across the curriculum.  The students will learn to organize their thinking and develop the competencies in our diverse and changing world.

LANGUAGE ARTS
The Language Arts program used for kindergarten in our district is from National Geographic.  It is an explicit and systematic instructional plan for teachers.  It is a strong phonics based program that includes reading and phonemic awareness. The instruction is research based and includes differentiated instruction for meeting all students’ individual needs.  During the year, students will be learning and reviewing all consonant and vowel sounds, practicing letter formation, and practicing dictation of letter sounds.  These skills are an ongoing and essential process of reading, spelling and writing.
Lessons will be conducted in whole group to introduce skills and then broken up into small groups in order to target specific student’s needs.  Centers and activities will also be geared to supplement these skills as well as reading and comprehension.

 MATH
The Mathematics program is Everyday Math (EDM) from McGraw Hill.
EDM was developed by the University of Chicago and includes researched-based practices that ensure true, lasting depth of knowledge. It is the most field tested elementary math program available today.
EDM helps ensure students master key concepts by continually revisiting content in a variety of ways over time. It continually reinforces abstract math concepts and uses real world applications.  I will be sending home the HomeLinks which have fun and interactive activities to reinforce the lessons taught in class.  You may also visit the following website for more information on the program:

SCIENCE
National Geographic publishes our Science program that is NGSS based.  It involves a variety of concrete hands on materials and enriching activities which include science experiments throughout the year.   The program introduces several phenomena that students will revisit in later grades.  Students focus on observing what happens, and as an educator, I will encourage them by asking questions that build their curiosity.  As their language develops, they describe what they see and notice patterns that recur.
Within the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), there are three distinct and equally important dimensions that we begin to study in kindergarten. These dimensions are combined to form each standard—or performance expectation—and each dimension works with the other to help students build a cohesive understanding of science over time.
Kindergarten's main focus will be on:
*Needs of Plants and Animal
*Animals and plants can change their environment
*Pushes and Pulls
*Sunlight and Weather patterns

SOCIAL STUDIES
The Social Studies standards integrate many skills, major understandings, and the student’s own experiences in a variety of subjects such as citizenship, geography, American symbols, communities, commemorative holidays, and past and present.  As an educator, I will build an understanding of these concepts while furthering beginning literacy skills.
